Hand 2 you sound unsure of your read so I just bend over and assume the calling position.

[/ QUOTE ]I am very sure of my read. I'm just curious to see how others think. It seems pretty evident that you are calling down.

I misintepreted then. There are players where I would fold this with no problem.

Hand 1: Good turn check. Prevents him from testing you with air, and might induce a bluff from a hopeless hand. I would, however, bet the river. His check is likely defensive, meaning he wants to show his hand down, meaning he has something that isn't strong enough to bet, but he wants to call with, meaning he'll almost always call and will always be behind.

Hand 2:

If i'm counting right there are 6.5 big bets in the pot after he raises you, and you'll need to call 2 more. I suck at math but i'm guessing that means you need to be good 23% of the time or so to call this down. Against a commerce unknown, who might have 99 or A5, I think you're good often enough to call down.

Hand 1 I just bet and bet and bet and if he is passive with ATo/A9 or something well that's life. It's a situation where he's going to pay off with a lot much more often than he will have a better hand or checkraise the turn with air and I want to discourage loose flop peeling.

Dave, when you're on you're on. This is a perfect post.

I think the statement about discouraging loose flop peeling is paramount. The idea has been coined as, I read somewhere, "implied threat" (as opposed to implied odds). It means your flop bet implies future turn and river bets, telling the opponent it will be expensive to showdown his hand. If you start to withdraw your implied threats by checking turns and rivers, you will get peeled a lot and not know what it means.

It's one of the best reasons for value betting in position.

RESULTS

HAND 1: BB shows A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] and takes the pot.

HAND 2: I folded to the turn raise. I could not see this player raising without a better hand than mine. Though a few responses defended a call down to be correct against this "relatively" unknown, in my opinion, I had seen enough to fold.

Thanks for the responses.
