maybe i'm being dense, but how is alaska the farthest east?

[/ QUOTE ]

The Aleutian islands extend over the 180th degreee of longitude into the Eastern hemisphere. (trick question)

On the train/boat question, the answer is probably Chicago (the El, the Illinois River etc. makes it fit the question)

BONUS question: Is Hawaii closer to California or closer to Alaska?

I have to disagree with this logic completely. Alaska is east of those islands and in that same way maine is east of alaska. Its not really a trick question so much as its a stupid question because direction is relative.

Direction is only sort of relative.

Just like you cannot go north from the north pole, you cannot go east from the International Dateline. Part of Alaska is REAL close to the dateline, so nothing can be farther east.

Hope this makes sense.

I teach geography (in Canada) and I'll give these an honest try without looking. We don't study much US Geog. here but I'd like to think I'm pretty good at the subject

1. Los Angeles
2. Canada
3. Maine
4. Hmm, I'll say North Carolina...(hope it's not Maine)
5. Denver? (hope it's not Juneau)
6. I'll say Massachusettes but it's a total guess.
7. Hawaii?
8. I have no clue so I'll say New York
9. I'll wager the capital of Wyoming.. is it Cheyenne or Casper... can't remember... Casper I think. (Juneau is my 2nd choice)
10. Georgia?

World now...

1. Azerbaijan and Afghanistan
2. Wow. I'm gonna guess 6.
3. Nepal
4. I can't even wager a guess on this one.
5. No idea.
6. I'm assuming you mean country... Singapore?
7. Kathmandu (Nepal)
