Therefore, your goal should be to make a move such that for your hand range in the particular setting it doesnt matter whether he calls, raises, or folds, because they should all be neutral EV.

[/ QUOTE ]

If it doesn't matter if he calls, raises or folds, then he cannot make a mistake. If the EV for these plays is neutral, then it is indeed neutral. That means you will win nothing.

Without dead money in the pot, if your opponent has neutral EV, the only winner is the rake.

You guys are both wrong. Just because he has no -EV move doesn't mean that his move can't leave you with a +EV move.

Theory discussion got a bit off topic in another thread ( this one ), so I'm posting it here.

[ QUOTE ]
The way to ultimately outplay someone else is to make it so that it is impossible to outplay you. Therefore, your goal is to only give your opponent neutral EV decisions. Then he can make a bad move which will allow you to make a +EV decision but which again leaves him with only neutral EV decisions. Therefore, your goal should be to make a move such that for your hand range in the particular setting it doesnt matter whether he calls, raises, or folds, because they should all be neutral EV.

[/ QUOTE ]

I can't agree with this.

What do you think?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm with you. While an important factor, I think there is way too much focus on +EV, -EV, and neutral EV.

The way you outplay your opponent is to play in such a way that causes him to make more costly mistakes than you.

This includes situations where are +EV (e.g., AA v KK headup), situations where you are -EV (e.g, you raise with AKo and cause the player to fold a middle pair), and any number of other situations.

It is all about adjusting your play to maximize his mistakes and your return from them, and minimizing your mistakes and your return to him.

Easier said than done for sure ...
