What is the advantage of winning a seat then unregistering? Is it easier to make money playing satellites and then unregistering for t dollars or whatever they are or entering tournaments that have the same buy-in as a satellite and winning money there?

Because satellites offer a flatter payout. Take the $36+3, which offers seats to the $215. Roughly 1 in 6 entrants win a seat, so in a 300-person field, top 50 win T$215.

50th place in a regular $30-40 MTT with 300 entrants wins absolutely nothing. Obviously, the objective is to do both. Win the T$215, and then you're essentially freerolling your entry fee into 5-8 good-sized MTTs with a shot at bigger money.

I suppose some may find this process unnecessary, but if you're a decent player with a limited bankroll, winning $T is the best way to have a chance to take shots in bigger MTTs, as OP wants to do.

If you have $270 you should not be playing MTTs higher than $5.

Its better in a risk/reward sense. You could unregister and play 215 worth of free tournament-s instead of putting your eggs all in one basket in a tournament with 2000+ players.

If they are the only thing he's playing, I think this is true, and if anything not conservative enough. But the bankroll requirements aren't quite as significant if you're taking occasional MTT shots on a bankroll that is replenished by SNGs or cash games, in my opinion.
