You may discount the skill in poker, and generally it is exaggerated. Can it be denied though that Ungar was an extraordinary talent, and that the awe and celebrity with which he is showered is reasonable? He was peerless in gin, won the WSOP 3 times, and could card-count six shoes. Why do you choose to discredit him and sneer at his perception among poker enthusiasts?

Where, exactly, do you see anybody "discrediting" him or "sneering" about anything? People in this thread are talking about whether he was, or was not, "The World's Best Poker Player" (like it says on the cover of the book), or one of the (few) best ever, or possibly more of a tourney star but not as good in cash games.

Those are all (somewhat) interesting questions, and the topic easily meets the standard (such as it is) for being interesting enough for this forum...how is talking about those questions sneering or discrediting anyone?

That account of the action is wrong. HERE is a link that explains play as it went down.

There are also several accounts of Ungar being able to read gin hands perfectly, and this being true, I have little doubts of his abilities at hold'em.

An excellent display of his playing can be seen in the video footage of the 1997 WSOP final table.
