Plus, most of the vegans I know have some glaring deficits in nutrition.

Problems yes, but not deficits in teh way I was saying.

You'd be surpised. So many average Americans are malnourished because of complacency. It's actually pretty crazy. A lot of people who think they are healthy sometimes really aren't. People with special diets actually have a leg up on this simply because they have to think about what they eat and take nutrition into account. It's really not that hard to get proper nutrition whether you're a vegan or not. You just have to think about it.

Enbracing a vegan diet and actually being a vegan are different.

I completely disagree with this.

My meaning was that a balanced diet almost invariably needs to include some meat.

Does it make you feel better to call him a vegetarian?

[/ QUOTE ]

I am not saying that at all. I don't have to call him anything. If someone claims to be a vegan and they are a truely vegan then I would have no problem. All I am saying is I don't think you can be half vegan you either are vegan or you are not.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think this is true. Vegans have staked out a hard line on something, and you by definition can't be a hard liner who only sort of follows your idea, whatever it is. That's for people who don't have such extreme positions. You're either a vegan or you're not.

I am pretty sure you create a diet that would give your body enough protein that you wouldn't have to eat meat.

It's not just the protein that you get from meat.
