1000th reply I win.

For me, the turning point in this series was Game 2, 6th or something'th inning with 0 out, Taveras on 3rd and Berkman on 1st. The game was either tied or HOU down 1, I think the latter. But Ensberg comes up and takes just a HORRIBLE mental approach to the AB. He struck out, which is fine 'cause strikeouts happen. But what was not fine was what he was trying to do with that AB. He absolutely HAS to be thinking ball in play. You get the ball by the pitcher, you score score a run. You just have to come into that at bat thinking middle-away and do whatever you have to to put the ball in play. Hit a lazy fly, hit a routine grounder to 2B. Whatever. But he comes up and swings hard and swings to pull in all 3 of his swings. Completely unacceptable and just horrible baseball. I was very pissed, not at the result, but at his immaturity and apparent lack of understanding. If I were the manager he would be getting an earful from me at some point for that AB.

July 29, 1998: Jon Garland traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Chicago White Sox for Matt Karchner.

I don't think minor leaguers count, I just wanted to point out such an awful trade.

Garland doesn't count because he never played for the Cubs or wore the Cubby blue. He was simply trapped for a short while in their minor league system.

Don't read too much into that. There are a lot more choices these days. If you take a look at the WS ratings from '68-2000 (this is the first list I could find), you'll see that the ratings have steadily declined since the rise of cable in the 80's. Almost every year is a new low because there are more channels, video on demand, tivo, internet, etc to choose from.

Heck, the Red Sox series last year is lower rated than any series before 1998.

And it's fair IMO to point out that had the White Sox gotten a tenth the attention on ESPN of either the Yankees or the Red Sox, the ratings would almost certainly have been higher. And given their dominant regular season and exciting stretch finish against the Indians, it's hard to say they shouldn't have had more coverage. Anyone who doesn't think the ESPN hype machine can impact things like eventual WS ratings is kidding themselves.
