Re: My Reason and Phillips Poll

At pretty much every forum I have posted in some mods get too carried away, actively looking for stuff to mod. I am admin at a pretty big site and we always tell mods to not look for stuff to moderate. If you come across it or if it is reported, then it is ok.

A mod is just a poster with an extra button. Anyone thinking it goes beyond that is unsuited.

Well stated.

One thing about this whole thing with the bannings, it has brought on a marked increase in gimmick accounts and troll posts that have been showing up. In retrospect, I think the mods can look back and see that these attempts to bring "civility" have actually contributed to the new lack thereof.

Top Reasons Paul shouldn\'t be banned....and why

I'll have to take the moderators word that Paul said some bad comments that deserved an apology. And the fact of the matter is I even bet Paul probably did. But, should he be banned for speaking his mind, however mean it might get?
Sure this site is owned by Sklansky and the like. But, it's not that his views, opinions, or comments represent the business of two plus two publishing. And if he says something you don't like, simply delete the post. Which appears the moderators did. The bottom line is he does not work for two plus two, and should not be held to a higher standard of professionalism than anyone else. Just calling someone a moron, and a member of the hitler youth isn't the worst thing in the world. I've been called far worse than that. And to think I took it Paul was making a reference to the censorship and propaganda the nazi party was known for. I'm sure he didn't mean that the owners of two plus two wanted to exterminate members of the jewish faith. So cut the guy a break. He's contributing to a web site, and commenting on hands to other players that want to hear what he has to say. If he gets out of line....well delete his post, but surely nothing short of giving the two plus two website a virus, or posting porngraphic pics should get him banned from a PUBLIC----(Key Word) Forum.

This moderator in particular abuses his 'powers' and takes them far too seriously.

[/ QUOTE ]

What's the point of being a moderator if you don't take your position seriously?

Let's cut these guys some slack and appreciate them for making thing better overall and doubt our own infallibiliy a little more. If we weren't all a bunch of crybabies we wouldn't need these guys.

[/ QUOTE ]

True, but there is a limit. I know OOT is a free-for-all (or should be), but come on...do you call this "taking moderation seriously?"

I think if you privately apologized to Phillips, then publicly apoligized to him in this forum he might return.

It's worth a shot.

No it is not worth a shot. And it is not even close.

Wow. Banning a poster of PP's stature is just plain dumb to do. This forum will only suffer for it.

And if he wanted to post here, I;m sure he knows far many more ways to get back in than you do to ban him, from any computer he chooses.

Mason,

I hope the results of the poll have made you aware of the degree of schmuckiness inherent to the banning and moderation practices around here.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree. I read a thread a few days ago when a mod was planning to ban one person a day until his birthday. How is that making this board better? Good moderators work should go unnoticed, but it seems as those entrusted with the power view banning as a trophy of sorts.

Drama on internet forums is precious. I don't even know who PP is or what he said. Time for people to spend a little more time in the "real world" and less time on the internet.

[/ QUOTE ] Agree. If I were writing a book on the "Theory of running a forum, for advanced posters," this would be a prime example of what NOT to do.
