View Full Version : $33: 4 hands from yesterday's losing session

12-27-2005, 10:44 PM
So I played 13 games yesterday (a lot for me since I play one at a time). I was down for the day, but after reviewing HH's I did not make as many mistakes as I thought, but here are a few that were probably wrong...

He is in the same shape as me and can't wait too long for a hand...

1. Fine.

2. I'd have made a pot-sized bet on the turn. Then when he check-raises you all-in, you might not have that same read (that he thought you were bluffing). As is, it's read dependent. You're either way ahead, or he has you crushed (or I guess you could be drawing very live to a split pot). You made the wrong read. Not the end of the world.

3. I'd have made a raise to 175ish, though a push is certainly within reason, especially if you think you might get calls from raggedy aces. As it turned out, it didn't matter - you guys were getting in preflop regardless, and you lost the flip. Meh.

4. I'd fold this and try to open-push anything given the opportunity. You know you're getting a caller in this case. If you were fairly certain the blinds wouldn't come along, though I don't see how you could be, I don't have as big a problem with the push. I'm always a little wary of open-limpers to begin with too, but this one turned out to be nothing to worry about.

I'd have played a few of these differently, but I don't think any are catastrophic leaks, with the possible exception of #2 - that one seemed a little reckless.

1. Fine

2. I think you can make a heftier bet on the turn.....but meh, I actually bet smallish myself plenty and unless this guy seems like one to have gumption to just shove at the pot/board I'd fold. Most $33 and under players will have already shown you whether they will make this play with a hand behind Q4.

3. Pushing is fine.....raising is fine too....but you have to call an allin (however there is an argument u get a bit more EV due to seeing flops and getting worse hands to push on you....but I don't really agree).

Hell, you could possibly even limp - I used to do that here sometimes but I wouldn't anymore.

4. Fold.....I don't think you have enough FE here as you're behind all of his limping hands (maybe live but still behind). You have a couple more hands to just open raise allin and actually will have more FE at that point vs. ppl who aren't sure whether they like their hand vs. one who you already know is willing to take a flop with it.

I think 99 here is a judgement call, but I'd definitely lean to a call. Giving him an 'average' range (44+, A7s+, A9o+, KJs+), this call is -EV. If he's "loose" (22+, A2s+, A3o+, KTs+, KJo+, QJs+), it is +EV. But even with the average range, it is *barely* -EV, and he actually pushed A6s, which isn't in 'average', so you're probably right to call, even if it's very borderline. If you've seen him raise 3xBB with this stack size vis a vis the blinds, then I'd lean to folding.

2. I think you played fine, except you should have folded. I'd have put him on A2 myself. I think that massive overbet often is done specifically to look like a bluff.

3. I'd have made it 150 here. I think against a push the only hands that call you are hands you are coinflipping or worse against and the blinds are not big enough to make pushing worth the times you bust out.

4. I wait. I think it's highly likely the limper comes along, and you're a dog to almost everything they'd limp. You're on the button, so you have a couple rounds to make a push where you have some real fold equity, and where you might actually be a favorite via Ax, Kx or a PP. If not, I think you can push any 2 UTG and have better +EV. It's not as thought the player is all-in, but if we treat it like calling an all-in, since you're pushing and villain has already called enough to probably be pot-committed, I calculated it as a villain push, and your call is substantially -EV even against a maniac range. (22+, a2+, k2+, q2s+, q6o+, j7s+, j9o+, t8s+, 98s+). If you think they're weak-tight and may actually fold it that may change it, but I think it's very unlikely.
