Default Not Quite

Mason has a good discussion of this in his book Poker "Gambling Theory and Other Topics".

Each chip does not have the same value. Chips go up in value the less chips you add and vice versa. Therefore, you take the add-on or rebuy if you are low on chips and reject it if you have a lot of chips.

You will win less tourneys without the rebuy but your average expectation will go up.

THat being said, almost everyone takes the addon.
