How I lost $100
There was a homegame. I lost $x00. That's no big deal, happens semi regularly. But this one particular bill stung.
Let me fast forward. Well, it's still in the past, so I'm kinda rewinding. But mostly fastforwarding. The game is padugi. It's a rather wretched game, all things told. To those who don't know, A234, all different suits, is the nuts. If you have no pair, and all 4 suits, you are going to have a legit chance at winning. However, we were actually unsure of the rules beyond that. Does AA23 with all 4 suits beat A234 with only three suits? Nobody was sure. But we did know that KQJT with all four suits would beat any pair or any three (or two or one) suited hand. Andy Fox is in the game, and he's doing a good job of pretending he's the fish. I mean, if you didn't realize that I was losing more money than him, you'd swear he was setting records. Remember, I'm fastforwarding. That is, this happened after I lost my $100. Andy says "So, wait, all four suits is good, right?" After being answered in the affirmative, he exclames "I BET!". Some Sucker then called him. Andy showed down A36J....with two hearts. NOt that great of a hand because of the two hearts. The Sucker shows a bunch of big cards, but all four suits and drags another healthy pot from Andy. Rewind. We just started playing Padugi. Nobody REALLY knows what they are doing. But we all know that Andy is putting money in the pot at a record clip. JustinUnderscoreA mucks a moderately decent hand, after showing it to me. I look at him as if he's not only got three eyes, but one of them is a trapezoid. What are you thinking? Scratch that...ARE you thinking? He goes on to tell me that he's played with rocks before, and they usually resemble Andy. He knows his hand is no good. I look at JustinUnderscoreA and say "hundred bucks says he has at BEST a KQ-high hand (of all four suits)". This essentially meant I was betting Andy had a pair or two of the same suit. Justin now looks at me from his trapezoidal eye, is wondering how I can afford to play poker, and says he accepts my bet. A few more draws, a few more bets from Andy, and I know he's full of it. I almost felt bad for taking Underscore's money. Last draw, last bet, and Andy tables some obscene four-suited nine-high hand (no pair). I still love you, Andy. Just a little less than before [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]. Good times were had by all. Underscore even has the money to prove it! Josh

Just a little FYI re: Padooki rules:
I've seen/heard of the game played two different ways. One is that you can only play one of each suit at showdown. The other is you can only play one of each suit and one of each value at showdown. In both variations any 4 card hand beats any 3 card hand and so on. So if you have 2 hearts, you choose the best one to play at SD and the other is not part of your legal hand. I heart Padooki. GoT

The Inside Story
1) I only lost 50 big bets in the game. This was remarkable in that I really didn't play as well as that. See 2) and 3) below. I was actually stuck a bit more but Gonores cut me for some chips at the end. Some Sucker cheated for me and I won 7 to 6. I felt bad so we cut again, sans cheating. I drew a 4. And won again. When you're hot you're hot.
2) We played 2-7 triple-draw lowball and, after listening to the rules four times, I managed to bet and called a raise with 7-6-5-4-3 at the end. When my Underscored opponent, who apparently realized he was dealing with an idiot, raised, and I called, he sheepishly said, "You got me, just a jack." I triumphantly laid down my straight, thinking I had a 7-low. Snakehead perceptively said, "You're screwed," Josh asked me if I put him on a full house, and some Sucker said, "nice call." 3) We were playing some hold 'em type game and I made the nut flush on the turn. I showed everyone what I had. Still, I got two callers. I then checked the river (I still had the nuts), Josh, good player that he is, folded his set, and Rick N. now bets. I just call. Rick turns over the second nut flush, expecting to win since I didn't raise. Apparently he was brushing his teeth when I showed my cards on the turn. The group was undecided about whether his bet was worse than my flat call. I felt guilty enough about taking his money, but not enough to give it back. And then Rick was nice enough to escort me to the street when I left, since he knew my chances of finding it, in my condition, were slight. What a guy. 4) Later on I made a 5-4-2-1 padoogie. And finished second. Gabe's promised me he will figure out the odds of losing with that hand. I'm holding my breath. 5) One hand we played hi-low split with an 8-qualifer. I had A-A and the board ended up A-8-6-5-3. I bet and Josh called. I showed my set and Josh turned up J-J saying, distruthfully, "Damn, I had a set too." I grabbed the pot, since I hadn't won one since the Johnson administration (and I'm talking Andrew Johnson) but then it was pointed out that Josh was entitled to 1/4 of the pot since there as an 8-low on board. F*ck him, I kept the whole thing. I only threw my cards at the dealer once. It was fun. I'm going to buy Ricky Jay's book and practice.
