Default explorer.exe will not initiate

I uninstalled an anti-virus program from my computer (AVAST I think) and when I rebooted explorer.exe would no longer initiate. Do I have to reconfigure my harddrive or is there a better way out of this? If it matters, I have a dell laptop running windows XP professional.

Have you tried starting it manualy? Just so you know it is explorer.exe that gone bad and not just the start of it.
