Default Dumb Dial up question

Last night when I connected the best speed I could get was 33,000bps (Usually I get 49,000).

My question is this. Is my intial connection speed, going to be my maximum for the session. Or if I connect slow, is it possible for the connection to improve over the course of the session?

i'm not gonna stand too strong on this, but i think you're wrong. i think that the listed connection speed is just determined based on some beginning modem tests and has nothing to do with the life of the connection. could be wrong though.

I thought I already did...

When the far end picks up, and the screeching noise (handshake) begins, the modems are negotiating both speed and error control (they are kinda related).

The handshake determines the highest speed at which the modem can connected at, if it can't connect at a certain speed, it steps down to the next speed down, but they don't step up.
