Laptop HD not registering

I purchased a new hard drive for my laptop installed it and it is not working. I have removed it and put it back in a couple of times. I have an HP laptop, hard drive easily pops in and out. I am wondering if i have to do anything in setup in order for it to work or if i should return it for a new one.

did you fdisk it? or wait, do you still have to do that win XP? either way, be sure to format it. Is it showing up as connected when you boot the computer?

Make sure you check the jumper settings. It could be jumpered as a slave and if you aren't using it as a second drive this might be the problem. If it's the only disk now in the system it should be configured as a master.
