...how a person ends does not invalidate how he started, or his achievements in the middle of his life.

Van Gogh was a brilliant artist. He committed suicide.

Was he a total failure, unworthy of study?

No. He is acknowledged as one of the greatest artists of all time.

The result of great investments is great wealth, failing to achieve success in investing means you most likely shouldn't be emulated. When a speculator dies penniless, the lesson of his life is that speculation is to be avoided.

Livermore was up and down a few million a few times. During his second time up he left a lot of money in an irrevocable trust to his wife and kids.

As to why he didn't quit during one of his up times, I don't know. Maybe he had to high of a lifestyle. But the fact that he had made so much means he knew how to trade.
