Default Becoming a Dealer

Anyone have any details about becoming a poker dealer at a casino (in particular, Foxwoods?) How much does it pay? What kind of hours can you get? Do they train new people or do they demand experience? Do you have to be 21?

You have to be 21, you have to have experience from a dealing school. Dont expect that it will make you a better poker player. If they were really that good, they wouldnt be dealing cards for a living.

I think Foxwoods has a regular training program when they're looking for new dealers.

The big disadvantage I see in dealing at Foxwoods is that until Mohegan Sun gets their poker room re-opened, a dealer at Foxwoods has essentially nowhere to play in the immediate area.

Will Mohegan Sun be re-opening a poker room? I was disappointed when they got rid of it just after I started to learn how to play.

The persistent rumor is that the Sun's poker room was shut down by the gaming commission.

When you think about it, I can't think of any casino operator that'd be so boneheadedly stupid to shut down a poker room just as the boom is hitting. I really don't see that event as being entirely voluntary.

I'm assuming that their management is doing whatever they need to do to get back in on that action. The only question is how long it'll take.

How much do you think the dealers at Foxwoods make per day?

Tricky question. I think they have to pool their tokes with all other dealers (of table games as well as poker), and it has been suggested to me that the toke rate in that casino is somewhere between $10-15/hour. I'm not sure what their hourly base pay is, but somewhere between $6-10 seems to ring a bell, sugesting that maybe they're making about $18-20/hour overall.

But these are entirely guesses and estimates.

I know a guy that deals blackjack at Ameristar in SL. He says he makes an average of $14/hr.

Thanks guys. I never expected it would make me a better player, just that it might be better regular money than my bankroll allows me to make at poker. I had hoped that they got paid more.

If you have to be 21 it's out of the question anyway. I guess I'll just have to stick to playing there

You're supposed to be 21 to play there, not that it matters, but anyway, if you work there, you can't play there and there isn't [censored] in the area.
