Too much tipping...?

Personally I think we should have more occupations compensated based on tipping rather than fewer. We should have more non-salaried people have a larger portion of their income come from some kind of variable compensation to improve performance.

I'm paid salary + bonus. If performance sucks, I don't get a decent bonus. Why shouldn't it be the same for everyone?

We justify overtipping, or tipping for crappy service, by looking at their base pay. But shouldn't more jobs have crappy base pay with higher variable compensation?

This is really no different. It's just that for service-related jobs, tipping it the form the bonus takes.

Also, as El D pointed out, if you're not really performing a necessary service, fewer people should tip you. If you're tipped enough you stay in the job. If you're not, you'll find a job that's more needed and people will tip you better.
