Need quick help - Skiing related
Going skiing for the first time in a few years this weekend and no longer have any gear, so I am shopping tonight to get stuff prior to leaving in the morning for a 3 day, 2 night stay. Renting skis/boots/poles at the resort.
So - what else do I need to be sure and buy tonight? Ski jacket Ski pants Long underwear (3) Goggles Gloves What else? I own many sweatshirts. Plenty of regular socks, should I buy thicker socks? Any other ideas appreciated. I leave for shopping in about 90 mins. |

Re: Need quick help - Skiing related
Clark,
I'd recommend getting a pair of liner socks (like thin coolmax sock) and a thicker pair of socks to wear over them. It will provide insulation, moisture whicking, and almost no chance of blisters. And a hat is usually a good idea too. Find one that will cover your ears but not pinch them enough to cause pain after 2 or 3 hours. And if you're buying a ski jacket, try to find one that has vents you can unzip (good for ski pants too). Freakin |

Re: Need quick help - Skiing related
Cool, thanks guys. Thin for the ski jacket and pants, right? That on top of like 2 shirts and a sweatshirt, and the pants on top of like long underwear and jeans?

And avoid anything cotton. It doesn't keep you warm at all when it gets wet. I usually wear poly long underwear & ski pants on the bottom. On top, poly long underwear, a fleece or sweater, and goretex shell.

Re: Need quick help - Skiing related
Don't buy thick socks, or double layer socks.
Buy one pair of skiing specific socks that are thin and wick moisture. The best ones are even thinner in the toe area. You will be warmer with thin socks so your feet can breathe. Don't wear sweatshirts, cotton isn't good. You probably have a wool sweater, those are good. One pair of long underwear should be enough. Goggles, wool beanie, jacket and pants. |

Jeans would be bad. Cotton sweatshirt would be bad. I think you'd be better off with thicker pants (as opposted to just a waterproof shell), and a thinner jacket. How cold is it expected to be where you're going?

Re: Need quick help - Skiing related
Dave,
You should buy some synthetic socks that will pull the sweat away from your feet, keeping them warm. This is critical. Socks specifically made for outdoors in cold weather. This could be the most import thing. Sorry if I got to this thread too late. Peace, Joe Tall |

Re: Need quick help - Skiing related
I think you'd probably be alright with thick ski-pants with long underwear under them. I'd definitely recommend getting a shell instead of a thick jacket. Layer long underwear, polar fleece, wool sweater, things like that. No cotton sweatshirts, no cotton turtlenecks. And try to bring an extra layer that you don't expect to need, just in case it's abnormally cold. If it gets really hot, you'll proabably be comfortable with just the long underwear & shell on top (and you'll still want ot be waterproof since you'll likely fall down a bit).
