Best advice I ever received:

1. Read many good poker books; study 2+2 books
2. Play tons of hands
3. Converse on 2+2
4. Play tons of hands
5. Get a coach
6. Play tons of hands

More poker specific advice...best I've ever received was from GoT who said that what this game boils down to is "weighted hand range calcs". Basically every poker book and every great player is a master at estimating hand ranges and acting accordingly.

It was my third time playing holdem. I drove an hour and a half up the mountain to the casino in Blackhawk, CO to play some 2/5. An old guy sitting to my left, clearly sensing I was frustrated and entirely out of my element leaned over and whispered, "If you were him, and you just did that, what would you be holding? If you keep asking yourself that question and keep trying to answer it you'll get the hang of this in no time."

Not because the advice itself was some golden nugget but because it sparked me to begin "thinking" about the game rather than just playing it.

Pep.

The best poker advice anyone could receive is this:

Make the decision with the highest long-term EV.

Default Here goes

Good post.

First, and foremost, it's fold . What could be more simple or more critical to most games than this concept? Easily 95% of the world's poker players would be better if they folded more.

The second best piece of advice I've ever received is raise . It's amazing how much more equity you buy as the aggressor in the pot. Once you've learned how to fold, learning how to raise makes you so tough to play against.

And finally... if you can't spot the sucker in 15 minutes at the table, you're it.

Raise or fold.

You have to have a good hand to raise, but you have to have an even better hand to call.

just to clarify, i think the worst advice ever given, or at least the worst advice listed in this thread is the terrible cliches such as;

"raise or fold"
"never coldcall"
