Computer Plays Videos Poorly...

Could anyone tell me if there is any specific reason besides a bad video card for videos playing poorly? They look extremely pale, and the contrast is awful. Pictures, websites, and all other applications look fine. It occurs on Windoes Media Player, Real Player, etc. Any ideas?
