anybody know the name of the star closest to earth?

Duke is right, the sun is the closest star.

Alpha Centauri is the next closest.

Actually, Proxima Centari is the closest, at about 4.21 light years from Earth. Alpha Centari and Rigil Kentaurus Alpha are both 4.3 light years away.

This is assuming that we're not supposed to find the first cremated "star" (movie/rock star) who had their ashes scattered around.

Why, yes it is =) Our sun is a yellow dwarf, a G class star as far as stars go.
