An actual question for buddists

No, this isn't one of those "haha made you look" threads.

Nor is it a discussion of Zen and poker.

Instead, if we have any buddists amongst us, I'm just curious about how poker fits into the "right profession" idea.

Isn't poker kinda the opposite of compassion, the epitome of desire...?

I don't know jack, but I would guess buddhism and poker don't mix well.

I was raised by a Buddhist family, and my father became a Buddhist monk years and years ago, but he's been really supportive and intrigued by my poker playing. He thinks it's great that I'm making money for myself while I'm in college, but he also has strongly suggested getting a "real" job at some point too for the experience.

I haven't asked him any specific questions regarding poker and Buddhism though, so take that for what it's worth. I suppose I could ask him if you care enough about his answer.

Mostly I'm curious. On ocassions I've tried living by some of the principles, and it's definately a good belief system (or philosophy or whatever the right word is).

I can't see myself ever becoming a good buddist, but maybe I'll become a half-assed one.

Your father's answer would be interesting, but I don't want to cause any trouble for you.
