Default Dumb Windows Media Player Question

A friend of mine with a crappy dialup connection can't play any video from the net and keeps getting an error with Windows Media Players (can't play source code or something like that). What can cause this and how does one fix it?

In many cases you can right click and select "Save As..." to download the file. Once it is downloaded, you can play the file like normal. As far as the errors, I don't know what to tell you.

The only thing I can think is that it's rejecting his buffereing request and WMP is complaining. Buffering on a dial-up is just asking for trouble. If he's still having issues after he downloads, then it's a codec issue.
