Dropping 30 buy-ins at the Party 5+1?

I don't really want to give away my secret strategy for the $6s, but what the heck, I was never really going to do it.

Try starting a bunch of them up and then walking away or going to sleep or something.

I tried this on the play money games, which I know are different, and my finishes were 3,3,2,3,3,3,4,2.

How long have you been playing? How would you define a winning player? If you're just learning SNG's, losing is pretty normal. If you've been playing them a long time, a big losing streak isn't quite as normal, and means quite a bit more.

Something to note: if you were playing 10's instead, you'd effectively be down only 15 buy-ins, which would be fairly trivial. Downswings get greatly exaggerated because of the insane rake on the 5's, and upstreaks do a lot less over time to balance those exaggerated downstreaks out.

I just started playing SNG's seriously last month, and noted that at one point I was down $128 in them, and given the number of games I had played, I would have been down I think it was $6 if I had been playing the 10's.

Pretty glaring difference both money wise and ROI wise eh? But very, very misleading. If you have the skills to beat the 5's, you can probably beat the 10's, and can actually make more money at them doing WORSE than you can at the 5's. Something to consider.

Dude I don't think a 30 buyin swing is all that common; I just think that you can't beat the game quite yet. I've never had close to a 5 buyin swing, usually around 5 or 6 is the worst I get.

You're the exception, not the rule. Five or six buy-in swings isn't really very unusual.

Are u serious? I know u play the 109's at stars, but dropping 5 or 6 buyins is NOTHING. I'd have to imagine this is a joke, small sample size, or you have a huge edge at stars because of more chips <-- (doubtful).

I read the hand history, nothing to add really beyond what others have said, except I thought you got pretty unlucky with the cards dealt levels 3 onwards. One ace would have been nice right?

Anyway, I don't know if this helps but about 3 months ago I started playing SNGs (and no-limit poker for that matter) for the first time. I played $5+1's and lost my entire Party bankroll - about $150 - within a couple of weeks. This was mainly due to not knowing how to play no limit poker or SNGs. Obviously. But all the while I was learning, and the most important part of which was reading this forum (despite having been lurking on this site for almost 3 years I spent most my time in the limit section).

So, I vowed to play better, not to multi-table until I learned more and I bought back in for 20 buy-in to the $10+1s. 50 tourneys later (yes sample size blah blah) I am showing a very healthy profit. I'm on an upswing for sure, but I feel I know a heck of a lot more about the game.

So the point of this ramble? Move to the $10s! I guarantee you will win*

So basically I need to push more, and stop being a pansy, which I figured was true. But can a simple lack of agression be acountable for a 30 buy-in downswing, or does there have to be other leaks?

Both of the tourneys you have posted, you placed 4th because you made a marginal (maybe coinflip) call for the rest of your chips. You were one place away from the money.

My solution to your problems? Make those marginal calls AFTER you are ITM, or way before... not when you are one place away. (Concept can be found in more detail inside TPFAP)

Your 66 hand. If he has an overpair, you are a big dog. If he has two overs, it is a coinflip in your favor. But a coinflip resulting in absolute -0- if you lose. So you put your stack in on an either big dog/very small favorite situation.

Your 53 hand. You want to let your tournament chances rest on a pair of 3's? I don't... but maybe that's just me. Fold and wait for someone else to call w/ a pair of 3's so they can bust instead of you.

You have great discipline and hand selection, but I think you could earn much more by making smarter decisions when you are that close.
