Re: Cheek or Chutzpah
Zeno,
Have you read the intro to The Oxford Dictioary of Quotations. If not, it's by Bernard Darwin, and it's wonderful. BTW, here's the answer to the question at the end of the intro. Never realized George Harrison recorded the song. http://www.twin-music.com/lyrics_fil...some/hong.html |

Re: Cheek or Chutzpah
yes well its sort of a blind spot most people have, not recognizing evil, monstrosity, pure power, whatever you want to call it. (sociopathology)
from child molesters to mass murderers (most m.m. are totally legitimate btw.) people just cant understand how a person could do such a thing. the truth is its a fundamental part of human nature. one of the things i always liked about good science fiction is that it was pure philosophy masquarading as pulp (probably why 'Neverness' is probably my all time favorite scifi novel, i read dune series twice i think (maybe more heh), etc.) |

Re: Cheek or Chutzpah
Great quote, thanks for posting it. Being scrupulously honest, I must admit to having never read William James, only what others have said about him. Not that I haven’t had a hankering to read a few of his tomes, especially the one about “The varieties of religious experience” I think its called.

Re: Cheek or Chutzpah
My Oxford Quotations.....' is a recent edition (1999) and the intro is by Elizabeth Knowles. So I missed out on the wonderful intro by Mr. Darwin. I well check the one in the local library on my next foray. Thanks for posting the song lyrics - they are great.
