I may have been confused on the languages, but he's living in Buenos Aires, which I'm pretty sure is in Argentina.

I know he was learning Portuguese before he left, maybe it was because he knew he'd do a lot of travelling down there.

That is a nice enough place, for sure, and the proximity to the beach is great. But I don't want to be in a tourist pad. I want a home that is my home, not a vacation condo with maid services and neighbors that are changing every week.

I think you could find that easily enough in the DR. You'd just want to be East of Cabarete, and far away from Punta Cana (land of the all-inclusives).

I suggest you take a vacation. Bring a laptop and monitor if you have to just to pay your bills. I suggest hitting Brazil, Argentina, and Puerto Rico in South America. Portugese is very similar to spanish. Spain is good too, plus you can visit other European countries. If you go to south america send me a PM, I have some friends down there that can show you around.

My main goal is to learn another culture really, really well. I don't want to just tour through different countries. I will probably spend the first month or two in an immersion school, then I want to live there for awhile. Not tour around, not visit, but actually live. I'll probably get a part-time "job" or get involved with some volunteer group or something.

I would love to vacation around the world - in fact, much of my next couple years will be spent doing just that - but this is a separate thing.

Hmm...I honestly think that San Diego (or "whale's vagina")fits all of these criteria rather nicely. I am not possitive, but I think that Chula Vista might just be a sovreign nation.

Catch-

Btw? Since when did you whimsically decide that you were "abroad" bound? I thought you were headed norte to Washington...

I've been thinking about this for awhile now - maybe 6 months. If I do it, it wouldn't be for awhile. Maybe 18 mos or so. While I do some travelling, I'd like to be based out of WA, but when I'm done doing that, I'm thinking foreign, I'm thinking tropical.

I didn't mean that kind of vacation. Find somebody that has a friend in another country, go there and have them show you around. I was a foreign exchange student for a while and having the right host family can, and probably will, make or break that kind of experience. If you want to get to know the culture, you need a good guide.

Being involved in some kind of program helps too.
