Add: Apocalypse Now

I'm not sure I'd put movies like Lawrence of Arabia, Braveheart and Gone with the Wind on this list. These movies are much more than just war movies, even though they take place during wars etc. If you want to expand it to include movies like these also add Gladiator, Troy, Alexander, and Cold Mountain.

Then, you might as well go with Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

Sadly, most people have never even heard of the best war movie ever made.

To the OP: You can't ask OOT for nominations for *best* war movie or else all you'll get is 50 replies from people trying to think of every random/obscure war movie they can think of or find.

Also, many of the movies on your list are hardly "war" movies.

And considering that the additions made to the OP's list are far better than the OP's list, what's the problem with that?

I can't remember all the ones that others have mentioned, so I'm just going with ones omitted from the original list:

Apocalypse Now (I know this was mentioned, just can't understaond how it got forgotten in the first place)
Heartbreak Ridge
The Patriot
The Beast (About the crew of a Russian tank in Afghanistan; clarified because there are other movies with this title)
Midway
The Green Berets
Galipoli
Flight of the Intruder
Victory (if Stalag 17 counts, this one should)
U571 (I think that's the title; IMDB is down so I can't doublecheck, but the one about the U-Boat)
Catch 22

A couple others that are kinda borderline as "war movies", but definitely involve war & are good movies:
Schindler's List
Doctor Strangelove (or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)
