[ QUOTE ]
One went to give away my straight flush to the guy w/ the nut flush. [/ QUOTE ] I'm guessing you mean "ace-high flush" when you write "nut flush". But if the board has 5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] on it, the nut flush is the the 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] or 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 4 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. In your statement, if you had the low-end of the straight flush and your opponent had the high-end (the "nut flush") the dealer was correct. |

I think he meant by "nut flush", the best possible flush on the board. A straight-flush being a different hand than a flush.
Regarding live play, I have a much easier time reading opponents and apply a lot of Caro's concepts to loosen up the table. You have to pick the right place, some offer pretty good incentives to play, aces cracked bonuses, high hand bonuses w/ no jackpot rake, etc. Even though the rake and the toke take a good chunk of the pot, the weak play/bonuses make up for it. In vegas there are several non-smoking card rooms. |

I play poker for 4 reasons, in order:
1. Fun 2. Competitive 3. Social 4. Money |

Since I live 5 minutes from the closest B&M, travel time is a neutral issue for me. Playing online has made me a much more fidgety B&M player-- standing up between hands, talking more--which I think helps table-image wise. I was probably way too serious before, but now I enjoy the social aspects a little more, or at least appreciate them more. Basically, the two options complement each other.

Like having a job - if you don't enjoy your job it becomes very difficult to do it well over the long haul and it's not much of a life (consider how much of your life is spent at work). I play poker recreationally - however, I am incredibly hard on myself in terms of doing anything I choose to do well. I appear (to myself anyway) much more disciplined than my local pros even though I can afford to lose the money. It's not the money itself, it's the symbolic meaning of the moeny in terms of my ability. As has been said before (I forget who first said this) "Money's simply a way of keeping score"
So, my reasons for playing poker: 1) Fun combined with the challenge of trying to do something well (wouldn't be fun without that challenge) 2) An escape from the real world (when I'm playing poker I DO NOT think about work) 3) Time for myself (my family often "gives me" trips to Las Vegas for Birthday, Father's Day, etc). With a busy medical practice and 3 kids, that is MY TIME. 4)Camaraderie/milieu - I like the small talk at a poker table probably because I have very little small talk in the rest of my life. I like playing with/stacking chips. I like trying to figure out or get a read on new people 5)Money. While I don't really need the money, I do give half my winnings to my wife who saves up and then takes a trip, buys something special (one time she took the whole family to Hawaii for a week with what she'd saved from the winnings). The joy I get in bringing home a big win for her is wonderful. Thus, even if I could triple my profit online, I wouldn't play online. However, that is solely because of my priorities. |

As I said before, the cocktail waitresess are a plus.
Also, its like being on the discovery channel....at any higher level its always fun to watch the posturing and comparison of who has the biggest respective genitals. Plus, people who yell out frush are really funny, not to mention the cocktail waitresess. Oh ya, did I mention cocktail waitresess? |

The number one reason I like B&Ms over online is the amount of player turnover. Online, your lucky to get a full table of the same people for 1 orbit. In a B&M, you usually play with the same people for the better part of the night. Its much easier to craft a table image and get a solid read on the other players.
