Gonna Labour the point here, but the book is outstandingly good. The backdrop to the writing of the book is pretty interesting also -- Kesey was working at an institute testing out drugs. He then went on to bring LSD to the masses and was a central figure in the early hippy movement.

It's worth picking up a history of Kesey and the Merry Pranksters.... the Tom Wolfe one is the most famous but not to everyones taste.

"The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test"

Featuring Neal Cassady, who was Kerouac's 'On The Road' partner, and driver of Furthur. Great American history.

what an incredible performance by all parties

probably why it was the last movie to sweep the the oscars in the major categories.

like what has been said kesey is the man.

I don't think it was. Silence of the Lambs did too (though I'm not positive). Depends what you mean by "major categories" I guess.

Yes, Silence of the Lambs also swept the "Top Five," that is: Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, Screenplay.

The first and only other was It Happened One Night in 1934.

The movie's pretty good, but the book is much better. Read it. The schizophrenic Indian who is a pretty minor character in the movie is the narrator in the book. The story is interspersed with his hallucinations and delusions.

The book was much, much better than the movie (which I found to be very disappointing).

Another poster mentioned "Sometimes a Great Notion", too, and that book is also excellent. It might very well be as "Cuckoo's Nest", imo.

As much as I liked the McMurphy character in "Cuckoo's" I thought Hank Stamper in "Notion" was an even greater character.

"Sailor Song", another Kesey book, has a passage that I consider the funniest I've ever read anywhere. That dude is a writer extraordinaire.

Also, don't miss "Acid Test", though it probably loses something without a little Sunshine to accompany it.

Then you could branch out to "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".

One of the greatest movies ever, and the book is infinitely better.
