The only two choices are Payton and Brown. Sanders was spectacular but not one of the greats.

I'm no football expert but this is my take: Jim Brown and Barry Sanders have the highest peak values but are difficutl to compare because they played in differenet eras. Payton clearly had the longest, most succesful career but was never head and shoulders above everyone else the way Brown and Sanders were.

Correct. In terms of his impact on a game, Sanders was more like a Randy Moss. He was good for some big plays but he was often a liability when the team was trying to go on a time consuming drive.
