My wife bought me a 1gb iPod Shuffle for my b-day, and I love it. Ideally I would like to have a giant HDD for all my music (in addition to the Shuffle), but the Shuffle is incredibly wee and portable, and holds more than enough music for any 1 or 2 sittings. After that, just reload!

Here's my obligatory iAudio M3 post. Get that instead. Back to the topic at hand, though, get the biggest one you can afford. You'll fill it. Also, you should be able to get a better price than $300 for a 20GB player. At least I'd hope you could. My advice is to skip past even the 20GB player and go straight to 40GB or 60GB.

But the Ipod comes in pretty colors!

I don't have quite as much music. I only owned 50 CDs before getting my 15gig Ipod and after that I have taken CDs from many more people and I still only have 7gigs filled up. If you are like me I would go with the 6gig mini that is coming out very soon because it fills enough music to rotate for several days and I think it is the perfect size.

isn't there a 6g mini with better battery life out now?

i don't like ipods because you have to use gay software to get your music on or off of it

By "gay" do you mean 3rd-party? I use copypod (which is like $10 shareware) and it works fine.

i mean anything that involves software is gay. i would want an mp3 player to be seen as a hard drive when plugged into my computer. i would move files back and forth using whatever file manipulation tools i wanted (even explorer or basic command line stuff). and i would be able to do this on any system.

most other players allow that. if an ipod did i'd own one, as for now i don't have anything (gf has a rio carbon which behaves 'properly' but the interface leaves much to be desired)

I believe there's third-party software that lets you mount the iPod as a normal hard drive, EphPod or XPlay or something, but I could be wrong, not sure. If this is a deal breaker for you (and it seems like it is) then yeah, an iPod isn't for you.
