42o in BB...advice seeked
Hi,
I was in Vegas recently and encountered an interesting problem. I wonder what you all think of it: Location: Binion's Horseshoe Casino Stakes: $4/$8 Quality: Not that good or bad Dealt 42o in BB. It's raised by UTG. Stonecalled by MP1, stonecalled again my MP2, stonecalled by 2 more LP people, so it's back to me for one more bet, but I'm getting 11.5 to 1 now. So I call it. Flop comes J53 rainbow. Fantasic flop and great potential, but I'm not there yet, so I check. UTG bets, MP1 raises, MP2 reraises. Now it's folded back to me and I have a decision to make. I'm thinking someone has an overpair to the J, someone else may have the AJ, and at worst, someone has a set of JJ (or some other set). It's been reraised to me with the real threat of a cap ensuing and I'm getting about proper odds to call now (18.5:3) with 8 outs (4 aces and 4 6s) at 48:8, but it can be diminished somewhat because of the cap possibility. But if I'm going to call this, I'm going all the way. Anyhow, I call and sure enough, MP1 caps. He is the boss now. Turn is a blank and completes the rainbow. With all 4 us still in. And the river is another blank =(. I fold. UTG shows KK, MP1 shows JJ (for a set) and MP2 shows the other KK. JJ had a reason not to raise, but I don't know why KK didn't reraise and put me and my BB hand out my misery =). Anyhow, my odds I was getting implied odds as well (I was certainly going to checkraise if I hit). But it's cancelled a little bit with the very real possibility of someone filling up. Question 1: Fold or call preflop on odds? Question 2: I wondering if people would lay this down on the 3 bet on the flop? I'm guessing if it's not a rainbow, it's debatable to lay it down? What are people's thoughts on this? With the pot that size, I'm thinking I'm going nowhere. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Garland |

Re: 42o in BB...advice seeked
Garland,
Even though all of those players who are in the pot in front of you make a call enticing, your hand is garbage and belongs in the muck. Your call is not terrible, but you ended up in the worst possible situation that can occur when you play hands like this: you catch enough of the flop that you are committed to going to the river -- and you pay through the nose pursuing your draw. BTW, you will probably have better luck getting responses to your posts if you place them in the Small Stakes forum. -- Manzanita |

Re: 42o in BB...advice seeked
First, please try to post $4/$8 games in the small stakes forum.
Second, please do not calls raises with 42o. Third, when its 3 bets to you on the flop, you don't have the pot odds to chase and must must must be folding. Good luck -Scott |

I dunno about the preflop call, but in response to Sobe...while he may not have the pot odds to chase, given the flop action, he can expect to make a boatload if he hits his straight. The turn action will likely be similar to the flop...if a 6 or (better yet maybe) an A falls, our hero can smoothcall the whole way and bring down a huge pot. Nobody's expecting 42o for the straight.

Re: 42o in BB...advice seeked
I usually play $10/$20 and $9/$18, and forgot $4/$8 was "small" stakes. Thanks for your takes though. I thought I did the numbers right. The preflop was probably a good fold, but I still think calling 3 cold on the flop still gave me the odds to chase...even with the threat of a cap.
Anyhow, thanks again. Garland |

Was nice to meet you.
Fold preflop. After that, no way are you folding regardless of the action. |

Fold pre-flop. You won't hit the flop hard often enough. You will flop a 4 or a 2 pretty often and will often have to chase.
Once you have a open-ender with three people you have to continue, of course. |
