Default David Sklansky Seminar at the Bicycle Casino July 29th

On Tuesday, July 29, 2003 in the Bicycle Casino Ballroom David Sklansky will be giving a poker seminar. The schedule of events is:

6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. - “No Host” bar and free appetizers/buffet (The food will be upscale according to Plaza host Robert Turner).

7:30 p.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m. – Two comedians are scheduled to perform. (Why David needs a comedic “warm-up” is beyond me ).

Approximately 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. – David will speak for an hour and will follow with an hour of answers to your questions.

After the seminar, David will do a book signing of 2+2 books. The Bike’s gift shop already has a full complement of David’s books for sale.

The Bicycle Casino and lead host Robert Turner is sponsoring the party/event to kick off several new lower limit games the casino hopes to spread on a regular basis. The new games are 6/12 Limit Omaha High, 6/12 Stud, 6/12 Stud/8 with an action bet, 6/12 Lowball, and a restricted buy-in No Limit Holdem game. Naturally, we are hoping you will have some questions regarding correct strategy for those games but all poker questions are welcome.

The game I’m personally most excited about it the No Limit Holdem game. The blinds will be $2 and $4 and buy-ins will be restricted to specifically $100 or $200. If your chips fall below $100 you can re-buy for exactly $100 and if your chips are below $50 you can re-buy for specifically $100 or $200. Short buys will not be allowed. We will have a competitive collection, there will be no jackpot (or jackpot drop) and our modified drop (the drop we take when there is no flop) is 50 cents (the lowest in Los Angeles). This game is tentatively going to receive Player Reward’s based on the Plaza Rewards schedule (Within a calendar month, if you play at least 25 hours you get $25. For each additional hour you will receive $5 per hour. That would amount to $650 for 150 hours played!) This game will allow you to get some no limit experience at relatively little risk. With the excitement generated by the World Poker Tour (the Bike’s WPT event is September 3), this game could be tremendous. The other games will qualify for Player Rewards at the Royal Section rate and will have competitive collections.

I have reserved a large block of tickets for 2+2’ers. You can pick up your ticket two ways. First, you can see me at the Bike Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from about noon to 7:00 p.m. (sometimes I arrive earlier or stay later). On Saturdays I am there for a few hours in the afternoon. The floorman who covers the green chip games or the shift manager will be able to point me out. Note that Thursdays between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. I’m often in meetings. If I’m not around you can get a ticket from Robert Turner.

Second, you can email me at the following special account I just set up and tested called sklanskyatbike@earthlink.net . If you email me I will reserve a ticket for you to be picked up at the Welcome Center (i.e. the front desk). Keep your response email as a receipt (sort of like an e-ticket for air travel). If you chose to email, copy and paste the following information:

In the email subject/title box copy or type “David Sklansky Seminar”. This will help me distinguish your request from the inevitable Nigerian money laundering scams and Viagra ads.

In the message body copy in:

David Sklansky Seminar at the Bicycle Casino - July 29, 2003, 6:00 p.m.

Your Name or Posting Name: (type in name here)

I have reserved a ticket for the David Sklansky Seminar through Rick Nebiolo!

I’ll be sending you an email confirmation. Don’t forget to bring the confirmation and pick up your ticket at the Welcome Center. Please reserve your ticket quickly. We expect this event to be jammed. Because space is limited, I can only reserve one ticket per email/poster.

Regards,

Rick

This sounds like a solid format, and if given a chance it may prove very popular. If the side pots become too onerous for the dealers, you might consider mandatory rebuys if chip counts fall below $50. Good luck with the new ventures.

Phat Mack,

This goes very well at a competing casino with a slightly smaler blind structure and $100 buy in. Half the table is ga ga over the WPT and they seem to want to make a move on every pot. Maybe they watch too much of Hon Le and not enough Howard Lederer.

I think small no limit games could be very good for the casino, but large ones have some of the problems that Mason has previously written about.

Regards,

Rick

scalf,

I embarrass myself all the time online, which is why I keep my screen names a secret. Hero and I play the mini no limit and pot limit games on Party, the no limit one table tournaments on Paradise, the one or two table and head up tournaments on PokerStars, and head up on Ultimate Bet.

One time just for a goof I played the no limit holdem ring game on PokerStars in a game with one penny and two penny blinds! This is a game and limit you can't easily spread in a B&M casino (the health insurance cost of the PokerStars' dealers just has to be less) but we are trying for the next best thing. Hopefully, some of those fifty cent - one dollar blind players on Party will want to try a no limit game where the players can actually "stare you down" ;-).

Regards,

Rick

Rick,

Congradulations on setting up what looks like an outstanding event/kick-off. I'm glad you are trying to spread some new games, especially the no-limit and lowball and wish you the best success.

I'll be in town in about 2 months. I'll be sure and swing by and give you guys some business.

Dave

PS, tell Hero I said hi. She's still the author of my favorite ever poker table quote:

"Who's the fish now?"

Default To Clarkmeister and All Interested

Clarkmeister and all interested,

I probably should clarify a few things and bring up a few possibilities.

1) Lead Host Robert "Chip Burner" Turner should get most of the credit for getting behind and promoting the new games, setting up the party and inviting David to speak. The Bicycle Casino is paying the bills and I'm just assisting Robert.

2) A few people who have spoken to Robert or me at the Bike or contacted me using email have asked about the cost of the seminar and/or buffet. The seminar and the appetizer buffet is FREE to interested players. However, you need to either pick up a ticket at the Bike (see Robert or me) or reserve a ticket to be picked up at the front desk the night of the event using the email address listed in the lead post in this thread.

3) Two Plus Two or RGP posters who want to attend and remain anonymous can certainly do so, since you can reserve a ticket (see the lead post in this thread) using your posting name and the front desk concierge will be matching your email receipts to a list I'll provide. But I'm hoping many 2+2's who attend arrive in time for the appetizers introduce themselves to me and each other and socialize a bit.

4) It is possible we can reserve a poker table to get an all two plus two or all rec.gambling.poker (or RGP versus 2+2) game or games going after the seminar. We probably could set it up mix if that is what people want. Routinely playing against 2+2'ers and RGP'ers is my biggest nightmare, but it sure might be fun for a few hours and would certainly generate some interesting posts.

Regards,

Rick

PS to Clarkmeister: Do you really play lowball or are you just looking for another new game experience similar to that "crazy" crazy pineapple game we played?

I just think lowball would be fun t try. But unlike Dynasty, I won't allow my first casino lowball experience to be in the 30-60 kill game at Commerce. 6-12 sounds like a much more reasonable learning ground.

Clarkmeister,

I sometimes get bonus points for good promotional ideas. For lowball, what do you think of distributing a coupon redeemable for 25mg Viagra for each hour of play? Players could combine coupons for the 50mg or 100mg dose if they so chose.

If the Bike or Robert Turner ever wanted to revive 5 card draw, you would have to find something stronger than Viagra.

I spoke with Bicycle Casino Host Robert Turner yesterday and he indicated that the club can reserve seminar tables for 2+2 posters and RGP posters. A couple of days before the event, I'll email everyone who reserved a ticket through the sklanskyatbike@earthlink.net address a query as to whether or not you would like a seat reserved at these tables.

Regards,

Rick
