annoying announcer habits
Watching a replay of the tour de france and Bob Roll has reminded me of a couple annoying habits of announcers. Feel free to add your own but here are a couple that make me want to change the channel even if I really wanted to watch what's on.
1. Overpronouncing foreign names. This is most common with Spanish but this tour Roll has brutalised French, Italian, Catalan and probably German. What I'm talking about here is attempting to pronounce the word with a thick accent as if they're speaking that language. Often this is accompanied with a short pause before pronouncing the name/place because the announcer has to prepare his mouth to "change languages." What makes this especially bad is that the announcers normally can't pronounce the words correctly that they are overemphasizing. It's basically the announcer version of old people trying to sound cool by attempting to use teenage slang. 2. Being huge fanboys of whatever athlete/team is out there. Bob Roll has his head so far up Lance's ass it's unbelievable. This is a bigger problem for local announcers. I hate the local announcers for Oregon games on tv because they are so biased it's unbelievable. An Oregon player will absolutely hammer a shooter and the announcers without fail will say something like "I didn't see much contact there, that could have gone either way" if the foul is clear but not ridiculously obvious they'll say they didn't see any foul. |

Re: annoying announcer habits
Mets announcer Fran Healy has two things I can't stand:
1) "Can o' corn." 2) He, too, butchers foreign names. Most notably? Juan "En-Car-Nar-Cee-Own" |

Re: annoying announcer habits
You should have heard Don Orsillo try to pronounce Scott Podsednik's name last night. He butchered it a different way EVERY time he said it.

Re: annoying announcer habits
Eh, I don't expect them to be able to pronounce every foriegn name correctly. The one thing that bugged me is that the two annoucers on OLN were saying France differently. One said fr-ance ... the other said fr-once
I don't really care which one is correct, just pick one and stick with it. |

Re: annoying announcer habits
at the calf roping and bronco busting I hate it when the announcers say things like "yee haw", "get-er done" etc. I think it really brings a negative connotation to the valley.

Re: annoying announcer habits
i was watching the white sox/red sox game today and just couldn't believe the number of times the WGN guys referred to the white sox as "us" or "we" or whatever. and then, for example, they've got runners on 1st and 2nd w/ konerko up and the guy's muttering "c'mon Paully, just a little hit, you can do it." like he's some fan in the 3rd row. it's so annoying and unprofessional.
