Smells like a pocket pair. I value bet. If he turns over a king, so be it

A pocket pair is possible. However, any singleton ten through king now beats me, and there are a ton more of those likely to be out (especially when you account for the numerous drawing hands that would stay this far.) A smaller busted flush won't call. An ace high would've almost certainly tried to steal preflop. If he is in fact being a simple calling station with a pair, I don't think I can push him off it.

I checked. What do you do if button bets?

I would definitely check and call here. The board has a lot of possibilities that beat you, and if the turn and river somehow hit your opponent (as is very, very likely, as you are now behind to any Q, J, or 10), he is not going to fold any of those middle pairs for one more bet. If you check, I think most players would just showdown either of the middle pairs (J or 10), and maybe a small king as well (the board may even make your opponent afraid of a check-raise). He would certainly bet a Q and likely a big king, but a bet seems as likely to be a bluff. In sum, a check here might both save a bet against one of the middle pairs and also induce a bluff. So check.
