I had a lot of trouble with this hand, villain hasn't been out of line

Flop: (t450) Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (4 players)
BB checks, UTG bets t300, Hero calls t300, Button folds, BB folds.

Turn: (t1050) 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG bets t400, Hero calls t400.

River: (t1850) A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG bets t500, Hero folds.

With top pair and 2nd kicker and a straight draw, I'd probably have defined my hand on that flop by raising him, if he comes over the top or quickly calls, then you give UTG credit and slow down. A min-raise would probably be sufficient to get the desired knowledge of his hand strength.

You folded over a 4:1 on the river after investing quite a bit of your stack to make this fold. Call it a leak, but I would not be folding TP2K after calling him down like this. If he's got a set, AQ, KJ or JJ so be it. Nice hand.

Yah I felt disgusted folding the river after calling the flop and turn, I agree a flop re-raise is in order but I just felt like it would pot committ myself.

I just couldn't imagine after the running turn and river scare cards that he could be betting into me with a hand I had beat.

I think raising after the flop was probably your best shot. If you get called or raised you are done with the hand and have dictated how much you are willing to invest in it.

But, most important to me when I before I call the turn with a questionable hand is, "what river card will I call on the River?" In this example, what card in the deck is good for me, or even more to the point, what card in the deck would make me think "oh, now I'm in trouble"? Pretty much no card.

2-7 doesn't help him, but he still could have the straight. 8-A only improves him, but he would already have me beat. Either I think I have the best hand now, or I don't. If I don't, I gotta fold. If I do, I am raising now and calling on the river.

Yah I really did butcher this hand in almost every aspect, is raising preflop really preferable to limping behind an UTG limper?

The stacks are deep enough so that limping isn't a horrible travesty. It's kinda bad, though.

If you're not gonna raise the flop bet, don't play the hand. (This isn't necessarily saying you're a bad player. It's saying that if you are not sure enough whether UTG has TPGK beat on this flop, you should've either raised or folded PF with an emphasis on folding. By now, you should know if he's the type to limp AA/AQ.)
