Default Best movie/sequel combo... NOT trilogies

Usually when a movie and its sequel does well, a third installment inevitably comes along that isn't nearly as good as its predecessors. For me, Godfather and to lesser extents, Blade and Terminator come immediately to mind.

But what are the best movies that inspired an excellent (or perhaps better) sequel, and then just stopped there? For me, Before Sunrise/Sunset is really the only one that comes to mind, although I know I'm forgetting some others. I'd have nominated Spider-man, but since the 3rd is already in the works, it's not a legit choice.

Two off the top of my head, although one is a little cheap: Toy Story and Kill Bill

Toy Story is a great example. Kill Bill was made as one movie, Tarantino had the choice of splitting it up in two or cutting it into one movie and he chose the first option, so it hardly counts.

Shrek and Shrek 2 might be another one to add, but I don't know for sure whether they are planning a third installment.

Yes, I totally forgot about Toy Story... in fact for many people the sequel was better than the first.... and the first one was excellent.

Kill Bill doesn't count since it was made as one movie.

Is there a 3rd X-Men movie coming out? I'm not really a fan of either one of them, but I know a lot of people that are.

I would say the Matrix movies too, since I refuse to accept the fact that Matrix Revolutions exists =)

Your post seems to imply that Reloaded was somehow good.
