early, mid and late position
This is going to sound like a really basic question but what are the accepted positions in a ten handed game. I always thought first 4 after button were early then next 3 were mid and the last 3 including the button were late.
Then when I found this site and started using bison's hand convertor there were all of a sudden UTG+3 and CO. This made it feel like the positions were 5, 3 and 2. Please help clear this up for me. |

Re: early, mid and late position
Position refers to where you are relative to the button. LP = Button and one position to the right. MP = the next 3 positions to the right and EP= the next 3 positions to the right.
Thus in a 4 handed game there is only LP and the blinds. In a 7-handed game, there is no EP. And so on. |

Re: early, mid and late position
I assume you are not counting the SB and BB as EP?
Also, so then if I play 2 to the right of the button I am not playing in late position, I'm playing in MP? |

Re: early, mid and late position

Not preflop. First, they're already in(or partially in) the pot so starting hand selection differs from the players on their immediate left. So the blinds are their own category, but be aware that you are out of position for the rest of the hand. if I play 2 to the right of the button I am not playing in late position, I'm playing in MP? Correct. The concept of position is recognizing the number of people left to act after you. Also the EP, MP and LP designations refer to preflop decisions only. Obvuiously, if the circumstances work out, you can be in EP preflop and act last post-flop. |

Re: early, mid and late position
I have been playing first 4 after the button (including SB and BB) as EP then next 3 MP and final 3 LP. Guess this extra EP and one less LP will keep me from playing some hands and maybe tighten up my game.

Re: early, mid and late position
If you're using EP hand selection for the blinds, that part is too tight. In HPFAP, blind play is discussed separately.

Re: early, mid and late position
No disagreement with Kurn, just adding a little. Yes, you probably want to play a bit tighter; consider only the button and one position to the right of the butoon as late Position, and considering the 3 positions to the left of the BB to be Early Position, in a 10 handed game

Must be the Klingon version of Hold 'Em. Husker |
