Default How would you react?

I have played poker with a group of guys about 4 times now. It is a 5.00 buy in and people come and go as they please. They are over all pretty friendly guys and it’s a bunch of fun playing.

Game #1: 8-max. 3 hours. About 13 different guys played.
+28.00
Game #2: 7-max. 2 hours. About 14 different guys played.
+9.00
Game #3: 8-max. 3 hours. About 11 different guys played.
+15.00(took 5.00 out of my profit to cover for a friend I invited to play)
Game #4: 7-max. 4 hours. About 9 different guys played.
-10.00(the friend I covered for won 11.00 so he gave me my 5.00 back because he was short on cash)

At game #4 I threw 20.00 bucks to a kid who was down 30.00 for the night. He was the cocky loud mouth and was supposed to be the best one there. So I figured if I wanted to be invited back all the time this was the perfect time to lose because everyone was bound to hear about his "miraculous come back." So, I was calling his all in's with pair of fours or 2nd pair and crap like that. I lost 10.00 + my initial 10.00 deposit in like 10 minutes.

A few days ago I walked by them to microwave an instant soup and they asked me for my 10 bucks. I was like. Man I still have 35.00 of I-OWE-YOU's from you guys. I am not giving you anything until I get my money. They proceeded to tell me that they would take care of that but they wanted to get last night's game squared away.

No! Way! In! Hell!

How should I have reacted...

I didn't quite follow all of your story. (There seem to be a lot of details that aren't related. Like how many guys at each individual table. And what you had for lunch.)

If I understood, you played a small-stakes game and won three out of four, BUT (and this is a point you didn't seem to make explicit) you didn't cash in or out at these games? When you finished up $28 at the end of the night, they didn't give you $28 to put in your pocket to exchange for goods & services? That's very strange.

I've never played a game with strangers where I didn't trade money for chips at the start and chips for money at the end. If they hadn't paid me for last week, I certainly wouldn't trust them to pay me for this week. And if they hadn't paid me for three weeks in a row, I agree that you shouldn't pay them for the fourth.

Hmmmm. I guess the moral of the story is never lend any money, or borrow either. Cash games should be . . . cash. No money no chips. But maybe I just don't get your point.

If the community leader see's money he will write us up which is bad. They said that many of them owe a lot of money. I dont plan on giving them a cent. Maybe play on credit if i am bored or something. The ones who owe money are the ones who bust early and leave so they dont end up paying.

I would react by playing in a real game. If someone owes you money...make them pay, by one way or another. (I will let you read into that, however you like...) Tell those guys to shove it.

sv

p.s. Getting "written up" for dorm antics will have no impact on your college life. It's just a nerd senior with a clipboard, and an ego problem. I ran a full casino with slot machines, blackjack, craps, poker, and roulette my senior year in my apt. on campus. The cops used to come by just to see "how cool" everything looked, as they said.

If you're serious about trying to win real money -- then start playing with a better crowd of people. It's been a while since I played dorm/frat poker, but one of the important lessons I learned senior year was: "Don't play with cheats, sickos or deadbeats."

This is vital. There's enough clean poker these days that you have no excuse for getting stuck in a dirty game. Even if they're close by. Even if they invite you into the game. It's just an ugly, ugly scene.

Find a better game on campus -- or off if you'd prefer.

If you're OK playing for pretend money, then have everyone acknowledge this. Or play online.

Give them one of the IOUs to cover it.

Or am I missing something?
