Default Heads up - confused against early position raiser

I know this is the micro-limit forum but I figured I'd post here since I'm mostly a micro player. This is from my first ever session of 3/6 (god bless the open internet challenge). In this hand I'm reduced to a calling station for reasons I'll explain. Hopefully there's a clearly better line (I assume there is).

Villian is TAG. I simply call PF. I think this is already a mistake, 3-betting is probably better. I lead the flop with my overpair but his raise has me worried. He either has an overpair or is playing AK aggressively. So I decide to call and see the turn. I check call the turn too since I'm worried about an overpair (mistake?). Then the ace comes on the river. Is it a mistake to check-call that ace? The only other hand he could have is KQ or pocket 8s...I think. What went wrong?

Definitely 3bet preflop. That should be automatic. This will also radically change how the flop plays out. The villain is unlikely to try to bully a preflop 3bettor with unimproved overcards, and whether or not he caps will narrow down his range of hands.

As you played it, I think you have to play it the same.

I have no problem with not 3-betting preflop.

I take qualm with, however, not 3-betting the flop.

Yes, you could 3 bet pf, but it's not necessary.

I definitely agree with the others that 3 betting the flop is necessary, and the rest of the hand would play differently.

Hmm...I don't usually 3bet preflop, but that's not what I'm concerned about.

On that flop, anybody check/call, then check/raise the turn as long as no overs hit?

My knee-jerk reaction was to tell him to 3bet the flop, but I stopped myself. I decided I didn't want to get capped because we coudn't fold, and we might also keep a UI AK bluffing at us by taking a passive line. Do you disagree?

I would probably 3 bet the flop and slow down if he capped. but I'm still seeing a showdown.
