Default video poker

My local B&M has a 1-3 hours wait for a low limit holdem table. I thought video poker might be a reasonable use of my time while I was waiting, but only with the right strategy. Can anyone point me to a good primer?

I'd like to maximise efficiency/ Video poker could be fun, but this is no substitute for real poker, and I don't plan on spending that kind of time learning about it.

Thanks,

SF

depends on where your B&M is. indian casinos in particular tend to have extremely mediocre VP selection. if you don't see at least 9/6 Jacks or Better available, you're probably better off learning blackjack instead, or just standing still.

if you tell us what your local spot is, I can tell you what your realistic options are.

I'm between Soaring Eagle Indian Casino in Mid-Michigan, and the four casinos in Detroit/Windsor.

Thanks,

wizardofodds.com has very extensive strategy guides and payout tables calculated for many different versions and pay tables of video poker. 9/6 JoB has a pretty small HA, and some deuces wild machines actually have a player advantage.

your best deal out of those 5 choices is probably Greektown Detroit. based on their game stats, the have an overall selection of real poker, video poker and blackjack that are all worth playing.

in terms of VP, greektown has ample inventory of both 9/6 Jacks or Better, as well as full pay Pick Em machines which return 99.9%. the strategies for these two game varieties are probably the easiest to memorize, and are both listed for free on the wizardofodds.com site.

for blackjack, all three downtown detroit casinos deal a reasonable good game with the following rules: 6 or 8 decks, dealer stand on soft 17, double after split, and re-split aces. house edge is about 0.34-0.36%.

if you play at soaring eagle, the continuous shuffle machines are acceptable if you can bet the minimum $5 per hand to kill time, and stick to basic strategy. for VP there is 25c Pick Em and NSUD (Not So Ugly Deuces) with some $1 JoB as well.

Also, make sure you sign up for the players club. I'm not sure what the comps are like in michigan, but at some casinos the comps can turn a slightly -EV game into a slightly +EV game.

And at Greektown, a slightly -EV game like 9/6 JOB can become insanely JOB when you get backed off for not being one of their normal cattle.

Several VP players at Greek Town, took advantage of all the promotional offers the casino offered the players. Since they were playing very low -EV VP and the casino was giving them all kinds of comps, the casino realized they were actually losing money on these players.

Instead of just cutting down on the offers they were giving these players, the casino had them barred. The reason? They kept accepting the gifts the casino gave them.
