I like calling here and probably on the river, though raising the river would have some merit.

I don't think raising the river has much merit UI. You're basically hoping he has AJ and will pay off with it.

I'd call and call the river unless a J falls.

yeah I should have said 'might' have merit, it was just something that popped into my head as I typed it. I should have made it clearer that I would call, but I wondered if raising is good.

I really don't understand your flat call on the flop.

Are you afraid of a bigger starting hand (extremely unlikely -- a solid player is probably going to cap with AA, and you can't think he has TT or 55 yet)?

Are you setting up for a raise on the turn?

You need to raise on the flop to 1. charge a gutshot (KQ is pretty likely here) as much as possible and 2. find out where you're at while you're still on a cheap street. Had you raised on the flop, you would have either gotten called, and felt a little better that your hand was still best, or you would have gotten raised, and you could start worrying about a set. Without that raise, you're faced with a tricky decision here on the turn.

We don't raise the flop because we want villain to keep betting with worse hands, and we really don't want to get 3-bet by better hands.

KQ is not likely at all here.

Raising for information isn't a very good idea against a good opponent.

calls. planning to call the river or bet if checked to and call a c/r unimproved.

although, really, i'd suggest rivering a J.

I said "[censored]" very loud and called him down (the river was a brick). He showed me KQo and I was shocked.
