I hadn't seen him check/raise yet, only some really passive plays and loose calls, not a single raise actually

Bad play on my part? Pot was something like 7.5 BB when I folded

You are getting 11:1 for a call. You may be good, but if SB hasn't c/r before and does it on the turn when the A hits... I'm convinced and the pot isn't big enough to call down here (getting 12:2 or 6:1 for call down). I don't think you're good 1 in 6 times here (given your read).
