Well, if you have to be there, I think the only poker room in town is at the Red Lion. I've never played there. The brief times I was there, no games were going. I think they have some low limit. A lady next to me in my game last weekend lives there. I think she said they had some games. I have heard they sometimes have (had?) a 2-10 stud game. That would be a trap for a bad player. Elko is not the most happening place. How is it you are ending up there? Work for a mining company or something?

Default Fast Times in Elko

My enduring image of Elko is roaming around an old casino (Cattleman's? Stockman's?) about midnight on a Saturday with about 30 people in the place. Some older ladies were playing a slot machine with cows on it where you could play 3 silver dollars and the jackpot was $100. When somebody hit the jackpot it would moo. Awesome.

That was about a dozen years ago, but I didn't see any poker games.

I don't remember that part -- it was a surreal post-season bowling league party where our teammates no-showed for the bus ride. My wife couldn't even find a crap game at midnight on a Saturday.

Default Elko Surrealism

Funny you should use the word surreal. You know, I have found Elko like that too. I get this bizarre feeling there even when nothing bad happens. Weird. I've never gambled a cent there. I went down there once to gamble with a friend and we both thought it was weird. We saw the stuffed bear and a downtrodden casino or two and turned around. Another time I had to go there to pick up some documents. I got a strange sense about things. I ate in the coffee shop at the Red Lion, made a phone call, and left. If I saw a slot machine that mooed I might have played. But I just ate the bad food and slid out. The people were always nice enough and I was treated just fine I have to say. So I can't pinpoint exactly why I think it's different.

We want a trip report Flats.
