Default Order of showing on river - need help!

I've been playing in a $5-10 limit home game. There are a few ill-considered rules in use. E.g., no buy-the-button, ok to bet $5 or $10 on the turn or river unless someone's bet $10, and when you're all-in you can choose to go truly all-in or go light. The worst for me is that if the river is checked down, whoever bet the turn has to show first.

I hate this rule.

It's going to take a lot of effort to get the rule changed (there may not be enough flexibility at all), so I want to go in with every argument at hand. How would you argue against this rule? And, does any casino you play in still do this for limit hold em?

Thanks,

Matt

That's the way it works in the cardroom I play in. The last person to create action (bet/raise) has to show first, regardless of when that action occurs. I don't think it's a big deal.

The betting 5 or 10 on the turn and river isn't so bad either - you'll be able to draw more cheaply on the turn if people are regularly betting only $5, so you can play more speculative hands than you normally would.

By far the worst rule you cite is this:

when you're all-in you can choose to go truly all-in or go light.

This is one of the worst rules I've ever seen. It gives such a huge advantage to an all-in player that you should always play with a minimal amount of money in this game if they keep this rule. Then when you are out of money, you can either draw for free (if you haven't made your hand), or you can keep betting if you have the nuts. Horrible, horrible, horrible rule. They need to choose one or the other and make it the only option.

Matt, it is in your best rule to leave this rule as it is. The alternative is to have the hands shown in order beginning to the immediate left of the button. The problem with this type of showdown is that you could get put in the middle of a cap at the turn and never get to see the aggressors hands. Instead, utg shows the best and the "squeezers" muck instantaneously. This scenario can lead to some suspicious play. (I know they are friends, but it's still poker)

Don't worry about the showdown rule, some places do still play that way, and it isn't an unreasonable rule.

The all-in rule has to be changed though. I play in home games where players are allowed to play light, instead of going all-in, but they have to declare that at the beginning of the night, and if they don't have the extra cash available, they also have the blessing of the host who will be taking any IOU's or checks that are generated. The hand by hand exception is just a rule that is designed for abuse.

Good Luck,
Play Well,

Bob T.
