Default 1st Tunica trip, ? about GS poker room rate

I've been wanting to go to Tunica for a few months and decided this weekend would be good for various reasons. Unfortunately I decided that a bit late and the only room available was at the Gold Strike. I talked to the poker room and they said their rate was sold out for the weekend, so right now I'm expecting to pay the full price of $160. Obviously the poker room rate would be very nice, and since I plan on playing as many hours of poker as possible, I could easily qualify for it, so is there still a way to get it? I guess I'm not completely sure what sold out for the weekend means but I would assume there are plenty of people who have a room reserved with the poker room rate who for one reason or another will cancel their reservation or not play enough poker, so is it possible that the rate will be available once I get down there? Or if I play enough can I talk someone into giving me the rate as an exception even if it's still not available? Basically, what action do I need to take which will be the most +EV regarding my room? Also if there are any other standard comps I can get either there or at the horseshoe please let me know. Thanks in advance, and I'll be sure to let everyone know how my trip went if it's worth a post.

buffet comps are no problem at either the horseshoe or goldstrike. horeshoe has a better buffet.

Regarding the room, you'll just have to ask. The worst that can happen is they say no, but I'd guess there's a good chance you can get the rate. I'd bring it up as soon as I got there if I were you. If you get resistance you can ask another floorman after the shift change or something.

As soon as you get to the GoldStrike, get a player's card.
Use it to swipe into and out of (out is important too, it locks in your time played) the poker room. If you get there early enough to cancel your regular reservation, then you can park in the garage around back or in the lot in front with your stuff hidden in the trunk, and go get your player's card, go to the second floor of the casino and go to the poker room. They may not let you swipe in until you're seated, but you can immediately tell them you're there to play copius amounts of poker (they don't care at what level, the rake is the same), and ask them to please help you get a room at the poker rate. If and when you get the room through the poker room you can cancel/change your original reservation. There's usallly one person each per day and evening shifts who has the poker room rate scheduling duties. Usually it's the chip selling lady. She defers to the manager on duty about to whom to offer the rate, based on play, availability and mood of the manager(s). Late at night it's whoever is working the floor.

Call the Horseshoe and the Grand. $160 is way too much money to be spending on a room.

Default Re: 1st Tunica trip, ? about GS poker room rate

I've been calling the Horseshoe every day for a few days in a row trying to get a room there and they have nothing at all, for the poker room rate or standard rate. I would call the Grand but from what I hear the Horseshoe and the GS are the best places to play, not to mention they're in close proximity to eachother, so I'd probably prefer to stay at the GS for $160 than the Grand even if they had a poker room rate available. And the $160 is just for Saturday night, so a poker room rate would be very nice.

If I do show up early and get a reservation for a poker rate room can I cancel my earlier reservation through the poker room staff? And should I let them know up front that's what I'm trying to do or is that something I should keep to myself?

The Grand is less than 5 minutes from The Shoe. If you can get a room for considerably less you might want to rethink that.

The Grand has the best daily tournaments in Tunica. I play alot at the Shoe but always stay at the Grand.

If you have a car, the 5 minute drive is no problem and if you don't there is a shuttle that runs between the casinos. It doesn't run 24 hours though but I have called the Grand before and they have sent a bus to get me so you can always get home.
