Default Do not drink and gamble!

I have a huge problem, and this has happend to me a few times..
I play, I do pretty well.. I party, I drink, I get home, and I gamble. And with gamble, I mean heads up.
A few times this has lost me all my poker bankroll (however before I get any money to talk about.. perhaps 100$ at the most). This time I thought I had mastered the problem, or at least made it less risky.
Even if I still played after a party sometimes at least I did it at my usuall tables and while fighting hard to control my judgement. However this weekend, I got home, was drunker than usuall, couldnt go to bed because I would start feeling bad and then I turned to poker to keep me awake.

I'm frequent at the 0.25$ 0.5$ 6 person No Limit table. But this time I didnt only do the heads up, I swiched to 2:4$ or 5:10$.. (cant even remember). And that, is as you can understand, a disaster!

This time, I was lucky, I even won a buck or two.. But I'm very well aware that if this happens again, I'm more than likely to waste what I've been trying so hard to build up.

Anyone else with this problem?
How can I avoid it? All ideas is very welcome!

Thanks

I had a similar problem not too long ago. But it's just plain stupid to drink and play. I know it, you know it, everybody knows it. I always felt like a complete moron the next morning. I solved it to stop drinking. Except for the weekends on occasion but that's when I do not play poker.

I basicly only drink at weekends, and I dont feel at al like giving that up. To party is something I enjoy alot so I have to find some way to stop myself from playing even when my judgement is clouded by alcohol.

I know how you feel. When I am that state, I find it helpful to play the freeroll tourneys and work on building up my playmoney bankroll. Other cool stuff to do when drunk: surf for porn, watch TV, eat, sleep.

Am i the only one who's play doesn't suffer very much from drinking? I still know what hands to play, how to draw, how to protect my hands etc. My concentration is definately worse so my reads can be out. I stay away from the bigger games i usually play when drunk, but I still find many games beatable.

Although I actually prefer to play something different from "the grind" when drunk, such as low stakes stud, or a low-entry tournament.

I think your problem is that you enjoy HU play when drunk, which requires good concentration, great hand reading skills, etc. Try to find a cheaper let-out when you are drunk.

My advice would be:

If you are a good poker player DON'T DRINK
If you are an average poker player DON'T DRINK
If you are a bad poker player DRINK it will numb the pain of losing constantly.

Seriously though if you drink too much you are giving away any edge you may have at the poker table.

True story.
I was at a home game when one of the players who had been drinking too much started to say that 77 was better than AA. He went on and on how he ALWAYS wins with 77 and ALWAYS losses with AA. and on and on.

During the break I offered him a proposition bet for $20.

I would take AA he would take 77 and we would flop 5 cards best hand 3 out of 5 times won the money.

Needless to say I won the first one; he wanted to do double or nothing and changed his 7s to red ones because they are luckier. To cut the story short I won $80 during the break and he happily handed the money over still saying that tonight was not a lucky night for him.

Now he is a smart guy and a good poker player but drinking made him a fish at our table.

We have become friends since then and we laugh about it now especially when someone wins a hand with pocket aces and says, to him “Thank God I wasn’t up against pocket 7s”.

any hand can win 3 ouy of 5 but if you put 77 vs AA 100 times i think 77 would win more. But if the AA were suited I would take the AA
