Default What position am I in?

All,

I am a student of HEFAP.

At a full table I can figure out when I am in early position( first three positions to the left of the BB) at a ten player table, and middle position( positions 4 thru 6 to the left of the BB), at a ten player table, etc.

What I am wondering is what position I am in, in a game with less than 10 players. Howard Lederer, in his tape, says that you need to use how many people are behind you to determine what position you are in. Is this correct for the strategies in HEFAP?

How do I know if I should play the early position strategy, or the middle position strategy, when the game has like 7 or 5 people. etc.?

Thanks in Advance,

Player_X

If you are *not* in a blind, how many places to your left is the button?

If the button is on your immediate left or you are the button - Late
If the button is 2,3, or 4 places to your left - middle
If the button is 5,6, or 7 places to your left - Early

Thus if there are only 7 players, nobody is in early Position. If there are only 4, nobody is in early or middle position.

i don't think that is quite what he wanted, this is though:

5 handed.

UTG = early position
CO = middle
Button = late position
SB
BB

there.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your answers. I appreciate it.

However, your two answers are somewhat contradicting. Can you reveal your sources? Or even better yet, how do you get Mason or David to answer these questions?

Thanks in Advance,

Player_X

Your game will improve much more quickly and effectively if you don't try to play preflop according to the hand rankings in this book (i.e. play only groups X,Y and Z in EP, add in some group BB in MP, add in some DD and FFF in LP, etc)

Instead, you should concentrate on learning why certain hands play better in certain situations (MP, tight-aggressive table, 1 limper to you - you like ATo here? How about EP, loose-passive table - you like 22 here?). You'll then be much more equipped to play a range of games (10 handed on down to 5 handed).
