The following general guideline doesn't take into account rising blinds, having to determine how certain plays affect your chances of winning a tournament, etc.

You have probably already read/heard this, but just in case you haven't. The general rule that I have seen most often for shorter handed play is to treat the table as if 'X' number of players have folded in front of you. For example, if 5 players have been knocked out of the tournament then your playable hands from UTG would now be the hands that you would normally play if 5 players had folded in front of you.

For tournament structures there are some problems with this, but it is a decent starting point for determining what hands you are willing to play in a limit tournament.
