Sounds like a real good man. He's definately not after money and loves to help people. I would definately send him a letter to show how appreciative you are and send him something really nice to show how you feel.
You could also write a letter to your local newspaper praising him and all that he has done for the community, and get feedback from all the people that he'd helped. Get in touch with the newspaper and have the story printed and framed it up and give it to him. He'd be so pround to have this hung in his office. This is what I would do. Send him something from the heart, that is always best.
